Step One: Get To The Root
It’s easy to look at a yard and think you know what is causing the issues at hand. I remember the house that I remodeled in North Carolina a few years ago needed a great deal of landscaping. I thought I knew the problem was lack of sunlight and poor soil. I did all I could to get grass to grow in some spots but it never would. I remember one day working in the yard and observing something strange. There was a strange object just below the surface of the dirt. When I pulled the item back I found it was carpet. That’s right, a very large section of brown (at least I think it was brown) indoor pile carpet under 2-3 inches of dirt. No wonder nothing was growing.
Sometimes as leaders we can be doing all the right things and but still haven’t found the root cause or issues. Scratching our heads in frustration, or making yard tools flying objects, is a frequent sign of missing the core issues. Identifying and removing the root yields the potential of fantastic results. Find the source of the problem and then you can work to fix it. All other labor is in vain until the core issues are exposed and addressed. How to locate core issues is another subject which needs attention but, lies outside the scope of this article. Consequently, once I removed the carpet it was amazing at how quickly results came. It took time but now success was actually possible.
